Position: Computational Biologist

Department: Division of Mechanisms Regulating Gene Expression / Division of Regulatory Genomics and Cancer Evolution / Junior Research Group Somatic Evolution and Early Detection

Code number: 2022-0203

The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The collaborative project interlinks three research groups (Division of Mechanisms Regulating Gene Expression, headed by Prof. Dr. Michaela Frye / Division of Regulatory Genomics and Cancer Evolution, headed by Prof. Dr. Duncan Odom / Junior Research Group Somatic Evolution and Early Detection, headed by Dr. Angela Goncalves) at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) combining cutting-edge single-cell and genomics technologies with computational methods and cell biology to understand pathways leading to cancer resistance.

Job description:

We are currently looking for a motivated computational analyst for a collaborative project on identifying drivers of tumour-suppressive micro-environments. Our project addresses the question why some organisms, including many humans, never develop cancer in their lifetime. To address this question, we are using model organisms with high natural cancer resistance and exceptional longevity such as the naked mole-rat and Ansell’s mole-rat. Goal is to decipher natural mechanisms circumventing malignant transformation.

You will be responsible for leading and performing analysis as well as building computational models at the intersection of fast-evolving areas of single-cell genomics, clonal evolution and translational research.

Working as part of a supportive and collaborative team, you will formulate and pursue translational science questions based on large single-cell and genomics data sets. You will curate, manage and perform high quality data analysis and provide feedback to other computational and wet lab scientists. In addition to strong communication skills, you will be highly organized with a logical and diligent approach to information gathering.

Requirements:

Candidates must have a master's degree and PhD in relevant quantitative discipline (e.g. computational biology, genetics, bioinformatics, physics, engineering or applied statistics / mathematics) and a proven understanding and experience in the fields of genomics, data processing and high-throughput data analysis. Equally important is a high motivation to learn and adapt scientific challenges and to become a positive member of the labs. We use many different methodologies and concepts in different areas in biology. Therefore, an open mind set and a broad interest in biology across subfield boundaries is needed.

Other required skills:

  • Experience programming in high level scripting languages (R and/or Python)
  • Demonstrated expertise in the management and analysis of very large data sets
  • Experience of writing manuscripts for publication

We offer:

  • Interesting, versatile workplace
  • International, attractive working environment
  • Campus with modern state-of-the-art infrastructure
  • Salary according to TV-L including social benefits
  • Possibility to work part-time
  • Flexible working hours
  • Comprehensive further training program
